To become an all-round musician, students need a range of interlocking skills, such as musical perception, performance techniques, as well as knowledge, understanding and creativity. As only very few people will end up making their livelihood by giving performance, most of students will be the audience in the future. Therefore, it is very important that all students are taught how to respond to music critically. Western musical styles ranging from Baroque period to 20th century music are selected for analytical listening so as to develop the discriminatory appreciation skills.
Our curriculum aims to foster an enjoyment in music from a variety of different genres and styles and allow all students to have the experience of live performance. Although practically based initially, the curriculum aims to spark an interest in the deeper understanding of the complexities of music that come with the academic study of the subject.
Composition is gradually assimilated into students’ junior school years so that they have the opportunity to exercise their musical imagination and cognitive ability through the organization and presentation of music writing.
Performing is undeniable a necessary part of music learning. All students have to learn how to read staff notation and perform regularly as individuals and groups. During class time, music making takes form mainly as singing and instrumental playing activities. Under our curriculum, each student has the opportunity to be actively involved with music regardless of his or her degree of musical talent. Group performance can help students of different levels to learn and develop cooperatively.
