Japan-East Asia Network of Exchange for Students and Youths (JENESYS) Programme

Jointly organised by the Japanese government and the Hong Kong Education Bureau, the JENESYS programme was successfully held from 8th to 14th December. One of our outstanding students, Bernice Kwok, was selected as one of the 16 student delegates across Hong Kong. She embarked on a 7-day journey, exploring Japanese culture and telling good stories of Hong Kong.

The theme of the trip was technology. From visiting the cutting-edge Miraikan (National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation) to CYBERDYNE STUDIO, Bernice experienced the allure of Japanese innovation and science firsthand. The robots at CYBERDYNE STUDIO are designed to assist the elderly and individuals with disabilities. Bernice expressed particular interest in them as they showcased a humanistic side of technology and a profound concern for social issues.

One of Bernice’s favourite spots was visiting a Japanese high school. She had the chance to engage directly with local students, which brought her immense joy. The warmth and hospitality of the students made her feel like she was right at home. Participating in activities such as playing the Japanese taiko drums inspired her to appreciate the rich historical development and essence of Japanese culture.

Bernice recalled that her experience staying with a host family was truly unforgettable. Although it was just a brief two-day stay, they formed strong bonds. The host family not only took her and her peers to renowned Japanese hot springs but also allowed them to experience agricultural life, engaging in activities like feeding chickens and herding sheep. Laughter filled the dinner table as they exchanged experiences and insights. The students even had the opportunity to share stories about Hong Kong, proving that culture knows no barriers.

All in all, the JENESYS programme greatly enriched her life, expanding her knowledge and fostering invaluable friendships. The entire experience profoundly impacted her personal growth, enabling her to connect better with others and appreciate the diverse cultures of the world. These experiences encouraged her to cherish interpersonal relationships and inspired her to continue exploring and learning about global cultures.
