Inter-generational harmony (Elder Academy)
Our school has joined hands with TWGHs Wong Cho Tong District Elderly Community Centre, which is one of our long-term partners in community services, to launch an inter-generational programme named Elder Academy.
A series of classes ranging from computer and smart phone classes to musical instruments classes have been organized to let the seniors acquire a new skill. Acting as young teachers, our students teach the seniors how to connect to the information era and catch up with the digital trends. Meanwhile, senior citizens can share their wisdom and valuable life lessons with our students. It is believed that this programme can proactively cultivate a sense of respect and appreciation among our students towards the elderly and more importantly, foster inter-generational harmony.
Students' sharing:
  • I can feel the passion of the elderly and realize how close we can be. When we first met, they said we were as adorable as their grandchildren.
  • In the class, the seniors helped and sometimes made fun of each other. I used to think they were boring, yet their sense of humour has impressed me.
  • In the last lesson, the seniors prepared some food and souvenirs for us. It was heartwarming.
  • I am glad that I can do something meaningful to help the elderly to remain socially connected. Even it’s a small action, it has a great impact on their lives. Some participants made use of the skills to stay connected with their family especially the younger generation. One of the participants were exhilarated when her grandchildren sent her their photos.
  • I could still remember how nervous I was in the 1st computer class with the elderly. At the end of the class, the participants thanked me sincerely. Because of their encouragements, I worked even harder to prepare for the lessons and helped them gain digital confidence.
Giving back to the community
